By 2032, SNCB wants to encourage 30% more people to take the train to their destination. The new, simplified ticket offering is the next step in that journey. On average, prices will become more affordable and SNCB is introducing Train+. But what exactly is that? And what changes for you?
Travel cheaper on average with the train
A lot is changing in the SNCB fare system. Train+, off-peak tickets… Together, they result in a decrease in the average price of a train ticket for all passengers. Everyone will automatically get the best fare based on the distance traveled, without having to figure out which ticket is cheapest yourself. This new, more transparent system is designed to attract more train travelers.
SNCB’s goal is clear: make train travel more attractive. In their press release (SNCB, 14 February 2025), they highlighted the shortcomings of the old formulas: “On the one hand, there are tickets and season tickets based on the distance traveled, and on the other, fixed-price products regardless of distance. Passengers often had to work out what was most cost-effective. Flat-rate fares are not always beneficial, especially for short distances.”
The new pricing system is meant to solve this. Key changes at a glance:
- Travel further for less: long-distance journeys become 20% cheaper, with the maximum fare dropping from €26 to just €20.90.
- Introducing Train+: enjoy 40% off your ticket when you travel during off-peak hours or on weekends.
- The weekend ticket is updated: travelers aged 26–64 now get a standard 30% discount, even on one-way trips. With Train+, you’ll get a 40% extra discount.
- Season tickets stay the same: in 2025, season ticket pricing remains unchanged.
What else changes?
From October 2025, phase one of the new fare system begins:
- The traveled distance will determine your ticket price.
- The Youth and Senior Ticket, as well as the Youth, Local and Standard Multi, will no longer be available.
- The Large Families discount card will be discontinued.
Tickets and Multis bought before the change remain valid until their expiration date. Standard Multis (10-ride tickets) purchased after 2 April will be valid for six months instead of a year.
In phase two, starting January 2026:
- Groups of 4 or more will get 40% off.
- Groups of 15 or more booking in advance will get 60% off.

Save on your ticket with Train+
The new Train+ option offers big savings: Adults aged 26–64 get 40% off tickets during off-peak hours and weekends.
- Off-peak hours apply from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- On weekends, you always get an additional 40% discount.
- The maximum price for a one-way second-class trip will never exceed €14.
For youth, seniors, and people entitled to increased social benefits, the base 40% discount continues. But with Train+, they benefit even more:
- During off-peak hours, weekends, and holidays, they get an extra 40% discount.
- The maximum one-way second-class fare is capped at €5.50.
Cost of Train+
- Adults: €6/month or €48/year.
- Youth, seniors, and people entitled to increased benefits: €4/month or €32/year.
- Not combinable with group discounts.
Until January 4, 2026, you’ll enjoy a 50% discount on Train+.
What if my off-peak train is delayed into peak hours?
No worries: your ticket remains valid for the scheduled departure time. If your train was planned during off-peak hours, your discounted ticket will still apply, even if the train departs later during peak time.
